Does the new Optima measure up?

2014 Kia Optima vs 2014 Volkswagen Passat

We’re excited to have the new 2014 Kia Optima in stock because of its incredible style, features, and value for a great price. What we wonder is: how does the Optima stack up to one of its biggest competitors? The Volkswagen Passat is a worthy opponent and very comparable to the Optima in a number of ways. But who comes out on top? Check out our side-by-side comparison to find out.[table id=2 /]It’s important for us to note that the trim levels we’ve chosen to base our comparison on are not the most basic, nor are they the most richly-appointed options. We’ve chosen the popular, middle-of-the road models that people tend to gravitate toward: the Kia Optima EX and the Volkswagen Passat SE.

As you can see, the MSRP for each of the two vehicles is incredibly close. We’d give this one to the Optima if we wanted to be sticklers, but instead we’ll call it a draw and say that the two cars are about the exact same price. So how about the other categories, then? What do you get for your money?

The gas mileage is relatively close, but you’ll see that the Optima’s mileage rating is better in both city and highway driving categories, and more so on the highway. Does better mileage mean less horsepower, then? Nope! The Optima decidedly wins that category as well with 192 horsepower to the Passat’s 170.

Finally, we take a look at the basic warranty on the two models. The warranty offered by Kia is considerably more generous than the Volkswagen’s and we think you’ll appreciate that if and when it comes time to receive service on your vehicle.
